Four years ago, I met my wife, Winny.
At that time, she once said something very simple:
“I like guys who wear watches.”
Back then, I was wearing a very basic Timex watch. To me, it was simply part of my outfit — not a collection piece, not a serious hobby, and not something I had thought deeply about.
But perhaps because of that one sentence, I began to truly notice watches.
I started paying attention to different styles, different brands, and design languages from different eras. Slowly, I began to understand why such a small object could carry so much — proportion, function, mechanics, history, and personal taste.
I have always been someone who is fascinated by mechanical things. Objects that work through gears, springs, levers, and precise structures have always had a special attraction to me.Maybe this feeling comes from one of my childhood memories.
My grandfather used to keep a Hamilton 4992B pocket watch on his desk. When I was a child, I sometimes took afternoon naps on my grandfather’s bed, and I would often hear a very subtle, steady sound.
Tick, tick, tick.
It was the sound of that pocket watch running.
At that time, I probably did not understand what it was, nor did I understand what made mechanical watches special. But that sound, that rhythm, and the feeling of a mechanical object quietly continuing to run stayed in my memory. This is also why a project like the MARTINNY 2442 G.C.T. eventually came into existence.
But going back to the beginning, MARTINNY was not created as a highly commercial watch brand from day one.The reason I started MARTINNY was actually very simple.
I wanted to satisfy my own desire for a certain kind of design and idea.
There were watches with concepts close to what I liked, but they were expensive. There were designs I appreciated, but they were not exactly what I had in mind. Gradually, a very direct thought came to me:
If I cannot find exactly what I want, why not make one myself?
To me, MARTINNY is not just a watch brand.
It does not represent only one single design philosophy.
More accurately, MARTINNY is a way for me to express myself through products. It includes my understanding of design, my interest in mechanics, my imagination of the rhythm of life, and even some of my views on time, life, and the world.
So you may find that future MARTINNY works may not all look the same.
Some may be closer to tool watches. Some may feel more modern. Some may be quieter and more minimal. They may not all share the same visual language, but behind them there will be the same attitude:
Clear, honest, and designed with reason — not designed simply to follow trends.
I do not want MARTINNY to simply copy a successful formula in the market.
I hope every MARTINNY watch has its own reason to exist. It should answer a question, express an idea, or record my understanding of design and time at a certain stage.
To me, one of the most interesting things about a watch is that it is both a tool and a very personal object.
It follows you every day. It stays close to your body. It accompanies you while you work, walk, travel, wait, and think. It does not need to constantly demand your attention, but it quietly exists with you.
That is also why I want to build MARTINNY.
I do not want to create a loud brand that tries too hard to convince people.
I would rather build a quiet, honest brand that grows slowly over time.
A brand where the founder personally thinks, designs, tests, and is willing to openly record the process — including the imperfect parts.
MARTINNY CO. is still very young.
There are many things I am still learning, and many decisions I am still exploring. That is exactly why I wanted to create this blog.
I hope this place will not only be for product updates, but also a record of how the brand grows.
A place to document how a watch develops from an idea into a sketch, from a sketch into a prototype, and from a prototype into a real object that can be worn on the wrist.
It will also record how I, as a founder, gradually understand design, manufacturing, branding, and time itself through this journey.
For me, the story of MARTINNY has only just begun.
To be continued.
